Ferris Named LITA/GEAC-CLSI Scholarship Winner More than a quarter-century ago, what is now LITA began as the Informa- tion Science and Automation Division. This year's LITA President's Pro- gram and Membership Reception concluded the Silver Celebration, cele- brating a quarter-century of LITAship. Three past presidents--Steve Salmon (the first), Fred Kilgour (the only two-year president) and Bar- bara Markuson--provided their own unique perspectives on the next 25 years in library automation (some or all of the talks will be publish- ed in Information Technology and Libraries). The President's Program began with presentations of the four LITA awards, two of which--Steve Cisler (LITA/Gaylord Award) and Charles W. Bailey Jr. (LITA/Library Hi Tech Award)--were announced in the Summer 1993 LITA Newsletter. LITA/OCLC Minority Scholarship Shirley Fonseca is the winner of the 1993 LITA/OCLC Minority Scholar- ship in Library and Information Technology. Now living in Turlock, CA, Fonseca began her library career as Fine Desk Supervisor at California State University, Hayward, and later worked as a library assistant in the acquisitions department of the California State University, Stanis- laus library. During that time she was able to help implement a new automated system, which included online catalog, circulation and acqui- sitions modules. After considering teaching, Fonseca decided that the library was her career and that it was the place she could make the greatest con- tribution. Fonseca said "I am also motivated by my desire to contrib- ute minority representation to the professional ranks of libraries, particularly in the field of information systems management. I feel that an M.L.I.S. will open the door to me to fulfill my goal to be a professional in a career that I enjoy, respect and love." LITA/GEAC-CLSI Scholarship Mary K. Ferris is the winner of the 1993 LITA/GEAC-CLSI Scholarship in Library and Information Technology. From Hot Springs, Arkansas, Ferris has 13 years of diverse library experience, 11 of which were at the community college level. She has already been an active attendee at ALA conferences and was a recipient of the 1992 3M/NMRT Professional Development Grant to attend the 1992 ALA Annual Conference in San Fran- cisco. Active in many Arkansas library organizations, Ferris now has the opportunity to begin a systems analysis for planning and implementing the automation of a community college in Arkansas. "This is an added incentive to complete my MLS in a timely manner. I am looking forward to the challenge!" Past Presidents Gather Eighteen of of the 25 past LITA presidents joined the current and in- coming LITA presidents and LITA executive director in a celebratory luncheon before the LITA Presidents' Program in New Orleans. Presi- dents received engraved paperweights. LITA received significant financial support for the Silver Celebra- tion (including the Membership Reception) from Data Research Associ- ates (DRA), Faxon, OCLC and the Research Libraries Group (RLG). LITA thanks these organizations--along with Gaylord, GEAC-CLSI and Pierian Press (Library Hi Tech) for their continued support of LITA activities. To: KATHYK(KATHY.KLEMPERER@DARTMOUTH.EDU)
